To celebrate the spooky season this year and the release of the much anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,

we will be putting together some shrimp cocktail from the original movie of Beetlejuice!

This dish was inspired by one of the most iconic cinematic dinner scenes of all time where Delia starts singing the Banana Boat Song and everyone begins dancing uncontrollably, before the shrimp cocktails at the dinner table come to life! These massive prawns turn out to be fingers of large arms which then attack the guests' faces, pulling them towards the bowls before pushing them back in their chairs causing them to topple back onto the floor.

There are countless cocktail shrimp recipes available, but we have put our own unique spin on it by showing you how to incorporate the iconic green and purple colours that the franchise is known for. As novice homecooks ourselves, we made sure that this recipe is easy to make and uses only ingredients readily available in any house! Not only is it terrifyingly tasty (according to our roommates who tried it), but its fun to assemble with your friends during halloween parties as well! Just keep an eye on the shrimp throughout, we wouldn't want to face the same fates as the dinner guests that night...

Ingredients

Protein

  • 1 pound of large Shrimp (frozen/ raw based on preference)

Sauce

  • 1 1/4 cup of Ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon Mustard/ horseradish

  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice

  • A dash of Pepper

  • A dash of Salt

  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce

  • (optional) herbs

  • 4-5 tablespoons of Pesto

  • Food colouring (Blue/ Purple)

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 5 minutes

Servings: 4-5

Instructions

Shrimp

  1. Boil your water and cook the shrimp for 3-5 minutes until pink. Rest them in ice water and drain for later use. If you are using frozen cooked shrimp, thaw them according to packaging instructions.

Sauce

  1. Combine Ketchup, Mustard, pepper, salt, hot sauce of your choice (we used sriracha), herbs (optional, we used italian seasoning) and mix well till combined.

  2. Add in a few drops of blue and/ or purple food colouring, mixing well each time until your desired deep purple colour is achieved.

Assembling

  1. Pour out the purple sauce into 4-5 martini glasses until they are 3/4 full.

  2. For each glass, take 1 tablespoon of pesto and gently place a sizeable amount on the purple sauce touching a side of the glass, swirling it in a circular motion slowly. Keep adding small amounts of pesto on the surface of the purple sauce while swirling until a spiral is created, being careful to not mix the two together.

  3. Place 5 shrimp per martini glass, making sure each one is touching the sauce and the shrimp next to it. And there you have it, Beetlejuice shrimp cocktail. Enjoy!
