While several remakes have popped up, the original 1971 version of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory will always grab a foodie's attention for just how realistic all the candy looked! From the famous chocolate river to the edible wallpaper; in a time before CGI everything genuinely looked edible.

However, the reality of movie magic is often a bit disappointing and apparently smelly as well! Mel Stuart, the film’s director, wrote in his book that the chocolate river was apparently made from a combination of 150 gallons of water and chocolate ice cream powder. Stopping at this point could still sound quite tasty however, the scenes with the chocolate river took 3 weeks to film before Michael Bollner (Augustus Gloop) had to fall in. During this time, the river had reportedly taken on a sour smell and the crew had taken to using it as a trash bin for their coffee dregs. Not the most mouth watering situation.
For a more delicious culinary experience have a look at ‘Wonka’, the latest 2023 remake starring Timothee Chalamet. The 50 year gap between the movies seems to have allowed for some serious consideration of how to bring the fantastical Wonka creations to life. Responsible for over 2000 unique chocolate creations, Gabriella Cugno was the chocolatier behind the vision. From ‘Hoverchocs’ to chocolate teacups, the props that the actors in ‘Wonka’ were eating were all edible!
While it may be a debate to decide which movie you may like better I think the decision’s clear for which set I’d rather be eating on!
